GOOD FRIDAY.
Liturgical Solemnity in Commemoration of the Passion and Death of our Lord.
Privileged Feria. First Class.
Station : Holy Cross in Jerusalem. Black and Purple.
The theme on this, the most solemn of days is, of course, the sacred Passion and
Death of our Lord.
This rite, formerly known as the Mass of the Presanctified, will in future take
place at 3 p.m. or
later (but not after 6 p.m.). And as was customary in the earliest days of the
Church, the faithful
are permitted once again to receive Holy Communion at this afternoon service.
The early part of
the Service will be conducted in black vestments, but for the Communion Service
the vestments will
be purple. The Veneration of the Cross will have greater external honor. The
liturgy of Good
Friday is unique and is made up of four parts :
I. The Lessons, the Passion according to St. John and the Collects.
II. Solemn Prayers.
III. The Adoration of the Cross after its Unveiling.
IV. The Holy Communion Service.
