SECOND SUNDAY OF THE
PASSION TIME
or PALM SUNDAY.
Double First Class. Red and Purple.
The Instruction which
accompanies the changes in Holy Week, prescribes in the first paragraph :
"Local Ordinaries shall see that... the faithful shall be given suitable
instruction for their
proper under standing... so that they may be able to take part in the ceremonies
with understanding
and. devotion."
The rite of this Sunday
consists of four parts : the blessing of palms, their distribution to the
faithful, the procession and the Mass with the Gospel of the Passion.
The priest proceeds to
bless the branches of palm, placed in front of the altar, in sight of the
congregation and facing it. And the people may hold their own palms and have
them blessed in their
places.
The procession in the
new rite emerges, not as a mere interlude, but as a great act of public
homage to Christ the King, a true repetition of the Savior's entry into
Jerusalem on the eve of
our redemption.
